Peace through strength innovation

Foresee threats... defend democracy

Emerging tech is upending U.S. national security, and strength alone can't fix it. America must adapt through innovation. Yet Washington and Silicon Valley are still speaking different languages. The Future of Security, led by Miles Taylor, is breaking down barriers so that innovators and policymakers can shape tomorrow, together.

AI + Election Security

AI can supercharge threats to our elections. But AI can also be part of the solution.

AI will add an unpredictable new dimension to election security. But there's hope. As threats to the 2024 election surge, we're leading a broad, nationwide coalition of experts to foresee the threats and surface new opportunities to better protect our democracy through technology.

We are:
1)Forging links between AI experts and election officials.
2)Running design thinking Policy Labs to red-team the danger and surface solutions.
3)Providing Leaders with concrete, actionable insights to protect elections.

Scr*w whitepapers.
We create change, fast.

We get things done through Policy Labs.

These are not academic efforts to produce more white papers. These are high impact sprints that produce concrete, actionable solutions.

We utilize design thinking principles to convene innovators with federal policymakers in Washington who have the power to enact solutions.

1
Top minds keep policymakers up-to-speed on new possibilities and risks.
2
Innovators and policymakers join intensive, results-driven “design sessions.’ They co-develop solutions to future public policy challenges.
3
We work with U.S. leaders to turn those recommendations into results — i.e. near-term adoption to prepare America for foreseeable challenges.
Spotlight

A look at the first AI+Election Security Policy Lab

In October 2023, The Future US and the Tech & Public Policy Program at Georgetown's McCourt School of Public Policy organized a groundbreaking Policy Lab on AI + Election Security. The Lab surfaced many of the findings and recommendations driving the public conversations today about how to address the issue.

The Findings

Here is the private memo and the deep fake video we shared afterwards with government stakeholders. We previewed some of these findings on national networks, such as MSNBC and CNN, and through opinion pieces and discussions in public forums.

The Impact

We engaged urgently with top officials across the federal government -- the White House, FBI, DHS, and Intelligence Community -- and relevant Members of Congress on our findings. Now we are working with those agencies on concrete actions to better protect the U.S. election system, including preparing state and local election officials for AI-enabled threats.

Here's what leaders are saying

"AI will turbocharge election threats. It's not the enemy. It's the enabler, but we're struggling to add it to our defenses. "
- Senior DHS Official
"Government will not be the trusted voice in 2024. Groups like this will be — and we must create 'islands of trust' the American people can rely on. "
- Top US Intelligence Official
"This was one of the most sobering conversations on election security I've had since 2020. "
- White House Advisor
